Every witch, sorcere and gypsy was suppose to own a cat under lore. Cats were familiars, they embodied demons who performed the witches tasks.

Witches were also said to take the form of a cat nine times possibly due to the fact that a cat has nine lives. Black cats were said to especially be the devil himself. They were also used for spells.

In modern witchcraft the cat is a pet and familiar who is kept for its psychic sensitivity.
