Charms

Red

Red is used in charms against witches.

In Pennsylvania the Dutch draw red lines around barns this is done to keep the witches out.

In Bohemia, they believed that a charm tied in a red cloth and hung around the neck would protect them against being bewitched.

Other charms to ward off witches included red-painted carts and wreaths of rowan tied with red threads. Braided red cords or ropes were also hung in stables forcing witches to stop and count every bit of thread before they can harm animals, according to one popular folk belief.

In contemporary witchcraft red is associated with health, energy and passion. It is used in healing and is called the great energizer and is suppose to stimulate the blood. Red candles and cords or knots are used in magic spells.
